Frederick, MD located equidistant from Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC offers a wide variety of local attractions.
Nearby are many Civil War battlefields including three - four if you count both battles of Manassas - of the most important battles of the entire war. Bull Run (Manassas), Antietam (Sharpsburg) and Gettysburg. Also nearby are many smaller Civil War battle and skirmish sites. Frederick itself was saved by paying a $200,000 ransom to Confederate General Jubal Early in July 1864 just before the battle at Monocacy. Mount Olivet cemetary in Frederick is the final resting place of Francis Scott Key, author of the Star Spangled Banner. The cemetary also contains the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers including a mass grave for unknown Confederate dead.
