From an early age, founder and owner of Mosby & Co. Auctions, Keith Spurgeon was drawn to older treasures. Even at 9 or 10 years old he was always trying to get his parents to stop at regional flea markets, usually without success. Coming from a non-collecting family his chosen career path is a bit surprising. He got his start, like so many, as a collector. When searching for his first antique car in the early 1980's he saw antique toys at the Carlisle and Hershey car shows and always stopped to take a look. He soon started buying at local shows and auctions. This blossomed into a business that has continued for the last 25 years.
A few years ago when fellow collector and friend Matt Protos asked him to partner in an auction business they co-founded Old Town Auctions in Boonsboro, MD. After three successful years and again wanting the autonomy of a sole proprietorship he founded Mosby & Co. Auctions. Initially an online only auction company he is now venturing once again into the realm of live auctions at a dedicated facility in Historic Frederick, MD.
Initially dealing in antique toys with specialization in Comic Character and Disney Keith has continued to expand his range of interests and knowledge into Advertising, Americana, Civil War, Circus and Carnival items and other areas. Mosby & Co. tries to have a wide range of items in each sale with a corresponding range of values, truly something for almost everyone.
Keith has written articles for various trade publications including Antique Toy World, Tomart's Disneyana Update, and the now defunct Collectors Showcase. Most recently Keith has been invited to participate as a guest appraiser at the Senator John Heinz History Center, which is associated with the Smithsonian Institution- in Pittsburgh, PA. |
